SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The twentieth-ranked Marist women's water polo team got goals from five different players, but suffered a 14-5 setback in its season-opener at #9 San Diego State on Friday. The Red Foxes got goals from seniors Agnes Konopka (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.), junior Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.), sophomore Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.) and freshman Kristen Siegel (San Diego, Calif.).

Marist (0-1) scored three of its five goals on the power play. However, the Aztechs netted 10 straight goals in the second, third and fourth quarters to put the game out of reach for the Red Foxes.

After Konopka scored the first goal of the game on the power play with 6:07 remaining in the first quarter, San Diego State (5-1) responded with the next three goals by three different players - Kimmy Keach, Amber Pezzolla and Leanne Ford. Rinker found the back of the net to make the score after the first period 3-2.

Pauli notched a six-on-five goal to start the second period to level the score at three all. From there, SDSU scored 10 straight goals to take a 10-3 advantage with 3:44 to play in the game.

The teams traded goals for the final 2:02 of the game, with Marist getting a pair of tallies from Siegel and Puccino. Both came on the power play.

In the game, Marist freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Gary (Livermore, Calif.) made five saves. Her counterpart from San Diego State, Kelly Campoli made 10 stops.

The Red Foxes will return to the pool on Saturday, Feb. 12 when they begin play at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. Marist begins play against #7 Michigan at 1:40 p.m. ET.
