LEWISBURG, PA. - The Marist water polo team, seeded fourth at the ECAC Championships in Lewisburg, Pa., was defeated by fifth-seeded Maryland 11-8, and 7-5 by eighth-seeded Wagner on Saturday. Senior Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) and junior Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.) led the Red Foxes with three goals apiece on the day.
Senior Agnes Konopka (Simi Valley, Calif.), junior Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) and Pauli each scored two goals in the first game against the Terrapins. After trailing 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, the Red Foxes responded with three goals in the second quarter, while only surrendering two to the Terrapins, leaving the score tied at 5-5 to conclude the first half.
Maryland went on to outscore Marist by a 6-3 margin in the second half, giving the Terrapins the 11-8 win. Sophomore Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.) added one goal and two steals, and Puccino tallied one goal for the Red Foxes.
In game two against Wagner, Marist jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter and maintained a 3-2 edge at halftime. The Red Foxes were outscored in each of the final two quarters, arriving at a final score of 7-5 in favor of the Seahawks.
Against Wagner, Marist was led by a two-goal performance from Puccino. Pauli, junior Alexis Solaro (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) made eight saves.
The Red Foxes will play Bucknell in the seventh-place game at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, in the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium.
