Marist Track & Field Successful At New Balance Invitational

Feb. 5, 2011

NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Marist indoor track and field team was back to combined action this weekend in the New Balance Invitational, hosted at the New York City Armory. Though the quantity of competitors were limited the results were quality. The Red Foxes saw two more IC4A qualifying performances, as well as, two personal-bests.

Sophomore Arquimedes DelaCruz (Wantagh, N.Y.) was the top individual performer for Marist during the two-day event. In Saturday's 5,000-meter run, he finished in fourth place in the college open division with a time of 14:43.79, a personal-best time by 20 seconds and his first time under 15:00. This is the second consecutive weekend that DelaCruz has ran a IC4A qualifying time. He earned a spot in the 3,000-meter at last week's BU Terrier Invitational. DelaCruz becomes only the third distance runner in school history to qualify for the two longest indoor IC4A events in the same season.

In the 800-meter run, Sophomore Matt Panebianco (Tappan, N.Y.) ran to a personal-best time of 1:57.13.

In relay action, the distance medley relay team placed eighth overall in a time of 10:08.05, an IC4A qualifying time that easily exceeded the standard by 11 seconds. Team members included: junior Will Griffin running the 1200 leg; Matt Panebianco the 400 leg; junior Thomas Lipari the 800 leg and junior Matt Flint the 1600 leg. Griffin's 1200 split of 3:04.4 was a personal-best.

In women's action, the Red Foxes were represented in one race, the distance medley relay. The distance medley relay team finished in ninth place in 12:15.29, a season-best time of nearly five seconds over last weekend's performance. The team was made up of grad student Brittany Burns running the leadoff 1200 meter leg, freshman Colleen Meenan the 400-meter leg, junior Briana Crowe the 800-meter leg and sophomore Jackie Gamboli the 1,600-meter leg.

Both squads will be back in action next weekend in Boston, Massachusetts at the two-day Valentine Invitational.
