POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's tennis team clinched the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular-season championship with a 7-0 win over Loyola at the Marist Tennis Pavilion on Sunday. The Red Foxes finished with a perfect 6-0 mark in MAAC play.
"I'm excited that we won the league regular-season championship today," Marist coach Tim Smith said. "Our primary goal is to win the conference championship and to our ninth NCAA Tournament. I guess we'll know what happens in five days."
At first doubles, Marist dropped its only match of the day when seniors Rhys Hobbs (Sydney, Australia) and Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) lost to J. Pierce Norton and Kevin Zingler, 8-6. Wins at the second and third slots clinched the doubles point for the Red Foxes. Junior Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) to defeat Keyan Sanai and Dan D'Agostino, 8-4. The freshman duo of Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) and Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) beat Bobby Gorczakowski and Jaime Russo, 9-8 (4).
In singles, Rossi beat Sanai, 6-1, 6-2. Pisecky avenged a doubles loss to Norton by winning, 6-4, 6-2. At the third slot, Himmelsbach beat Zingler 6-4, 6-0. In the afternoon's closest singles match, senior Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) downed Gorczakowski 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. At fifth singles, Reznek beat D'Agostino, 6-1, 6-1. In the final slot, Marcus von Nordheim (Munich, Germany) defeated Connor Lisco, 6-2, 6-2.
Marist is now 15-3 overall. The Red Foxes will close out the regular season on Monday with a non-conference make-up match at Connecticut. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
The MAAC Championship will be held this Wednesday and Thursday in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
