Final Stats
WORCESTER, Mass. - The Marist Men's Lacrosse team defeated Holy Cross, 12-7 in the squad's final non-conference game of the season late Tuesday night. With the victory, the Red Foxes clinched a spot a top the Division 1 section of the program's record book with their sixth straight win. After trailing at half 3-2, a 10 goal second half led the team to victory. Sophomore attack Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) had a team-high seven points on three goals and four assists in the contest. Marist improves their record above .500 for the first time all season, as they move to 7-6 overall.
Holy Cross started off the game with two early goals in the first quarter to put the Red Foxes in a 2-0 hole after nine and half minutes of action. Sophomore Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) got Marist on the board with his seventh goal of the season at the 4:13 mark. With six seconds remaining in the quarter Rice connected with senior Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) for the tying goal. This goal-scoring play extended both players consecutive point streaks, as Zindel's streak is now at 32 and Rice is at 28 games.
The offenses were shutout for the majority of the second quarter minus a Holy Cross goal by Myles Gillespie at 6:09. Freshman goalie Craig Goodermote (Holtsville, N.Y.) was the story of the quarter as the Crusaders took six shots on net and he turned aside five.
Coming out of the half down 3-2, the Red Foxes tied it up quickly as Zindel found Rice at 12:37. Holy Cross took back the lead for the final time 66 seconds later as they went up 4-3 at the 11:31 mark. After freshman Kevin Defranco (Shoreham, N.Y.) raced towards the net and notched his first goal of 2011 and second of his collegiate career, just six seconds later. Rice picked up his second goal of the game with a tally at 9:40, which gave Marist a 5-4 lead. The Red Foxes quickly converted a 10-8 opportunity, as sophomore Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.) took a Zindel pass and put the team up 6-4 with 8:11 remaining in the third quarter.
Sophomore Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) got onto the scoreboard at 6:19 with his team-leading 27th goal. Holy Cross closed the deficit to 7-5 with a quick faceoff win, pass and goal at 5:59. The teams traded goals over the final 3:46 to finish the quarter at 8-6. Rice scored Marist's goal, his third of the game.
The Red Foxes stretched their lead out to four at 10-6 in the beginning of the fourth quarter as Zindel and Doherty picked up their second goals of the game at 14:15 and 9:48. Andrew Morici notched the Crusaders final goal of the day on the man-advantage at 6:02. Grad student Bob von Hoffman (Montclair, N.J.) tallied his second point and first goal as he took a pass from senior Lou Loria (Bethpage, N.Y.) and scored with 5:16 remaining. Doherty completed the team's second hat trick of the game off of Rice's team-high fourth assist. After 60 minutes of action, Marist was victorious by a score of 12-7.
In the team's seventh game of the season of allowing eight goals or less, Goodermote led the defensive charge as he made 14 saves in his first collegiate game action.
The defense forced seven Crusader turnovers. Tomeno was the team leader with five ground balls, which came as a direct result of his successful 11-16 showing in the faceoff circle.
As a team, the Red Foxes outshot Holy Cross, 40-39, collected more ground balls at 31-23 and won 14 of 23 faceoffs.
The Red Foxes will next be in action on Saturday as they close out their regular season with a MAAC game against Detroit in a matchup that will go along to figuring out the MAAC postseason tournament picture. Marist goes into Saturday as the third ranked team, but through a variety of outcomes could find themselves as high as second or possibly on the outside looking in as the fifth ranked team. It will also be Senior Day, as the team's five seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
