PRINCETON, NJ - Fifth-year senior Conor Shelley (Rockvillle Centre, N.Y.) earned his first-ever IC4A qualifying mark by becoming the second-fastest 10,000-meter runner in school history, to lead the Marist College men's track team at the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton University on Friday night and Saturday.
Shelley, running in his first 10,000-meter race, placed seventh overall in 30:33.00, easily eclipsing the IC4A standard of 31:08.00. Only school record holder Girma Segni, who ran 30:22.54 and then 30:08.21, has run faster in the event in school history.
"Conor committed early to run with the race leaders and he ran a tough effort," head coach Pete Colaizzo said. He has done so much for our program through the years, and this was a nice culmination of all his hard work.''
Also in the event, sophomore Joel Moss (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) ran a personal-best time by more than two minutes, placing 22nd in 31:37.77.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Arquimedes DelaCruz (Wantagh, N.Y.) ran a personal-best time of 9:17.36 and placed 11th. His time narrowly missed the IC4A standard of 9:15.00 in that event.
On Saturday, personal-best performances were notched by sophomore Chris Vanzetta (Latham, N.Y.) (400 meters), sophomore Michael Clifford (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) (400 hurdles) and freshman Andrew James (Bellmore, N.Y.) (1,500 meters).
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday at the UMass Invitational in Amherst, MA.
