Women's Lacrosse Defeated on Road By UMass

AMHERST, Mass. - The Marist women's lacrosse team fell in a road matchup at UMass on Saturday afternoon by a score of 20-7. The 2011 Atlantic 10 champion Minutewomen showed the fans at McGuirk Stadium, who braved the elements, why they were chosen to defending their title with a strong performance versus the Red Foxes. Sophomore Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) led Marist with four goals.

The game began with a distinct UMass feel as the Minutewomen scored five consecutive goals to open up. The 6:23 stretch of play from 24:38 to 18:15, saw Lauren Terracciano and Jesse O'Donnell each notch two tallies.

Marist broke through onto the scoreboard at 14:47 when Romano cut to the net and beat UMass' goalkeeper Katie Florence to the high side for her first goal of the season. UMass then netted three goals to expand its lead to 8-1.

The Red Foxes closed the half on a two goal run to make the score 8-3. Romano notched Marist's second goal, while junior Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) netted goal number three via a free position conversation.

Coming out after halftime, UMass lengthened its five goal lead to eight on a quick 3-0 run. The duo of Romano and Miller spearheaded Marist's offense from the 23:20 to 17:59 as each scored a goal. Miller's goal at 17:59 came after the junior caught a pass at the top of the fan and darted pass multiple defenders before snapping off a shot past UMass' Rachel Vallarelli.

With the score at 13-5, the Minutewoman closed the game on a 7-2 run to make the game final at 20-7.

Romano notched the first of Marist's final two goals at 2:58. Freshman Emily Leonard (Brookfield, Conn.) finished the Red Foxes' scoring with a free position tally at 0:47.

For the game, UMass outshot Marist 33-10 and controlled 20 draws to the Red Foxes' 9. Marist held an advantage in caused turnovers at 11-9. Freshmen Sheri Fauvell (Moorestown, N.J.) and Christine Astarita (Kennett Square, Pa.) and sophomore Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) all registered multiple caused turnovers.

The Red Foxes will next be in action on Wednesday, Feb. 29 when they host Lafayette in their 2012 home opener. The opening draw is slated for 4 p.m.
