POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.
- In their final non-conference contest of 2012, the Marist women's
lacrosse team suffered a 13-9 setback versus Yale on Wednesday at Tenney
Stadium at Leonidoff Field. A 6-2 run in the second half by the Bulldogs (3-5) impacted
the final outcome of a game that was 4-4 late in the first half. Senior Ariel
Kramer (Syracuse, N.Y.) was the Red Foxes' leading offensive performer with
four points on three goals and an assist. Junior goalie Ashley Casiano (South
Windsor, Conn.) made 12 saves in net for Marist (1-9).
A budding, recent rivalry that has involved close
back-and-forth play over the past two seasons, kept with the script throughout
the first half of play on Wednesday.
Following an opening goal by Yale at 25:46, the Red Foxes had a response
for each and every Bulldog goal during the first 30 minutes of play. Junior
Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) got Marist on the board first with an
unassisted marker at 24:44.
After a Yale goal at 22:58, it was junior Amanda Tuck's
(Mamaroneck, N.Y.) turn to get into the scoring column as she took a Kramer
pass and beat Yale's goalkeeper Erin McMullan at 20:54.
The next two Bulldog goal-Red Fox response combos would
consist of tallies by Kramer at 13:21 and Miller at 9:08. Miller's score, a
free-position goal, was the 13th of her 2012 campaign, a total that
matches her career-high.
A Jen DeVito goal at 4:36 would give Yale the 5-4
advantage going into the locker room for halftime.
Though outshot 16-8 at the break, the Red Foxes had
stellar goalkeeping from Casiano, who turned aside seven Bulldog shots to keep
it a one goal game.
In the second half, the Bulldogs opened on a 6-2 run to
put some distance between themselves and the host Red Foxes. Sophomore Jamie
Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) netted both of Marist's goals, at 21:58 and 13:57,
respectively.
Marist closed out the final eight and a half minutes of
play with a 3-2 run on goals to make the final score 13-9. Red Fox goal scorers
down the stretch were Romano and Kramer with two. These goals gave each scorer
a hat trick for the contest.
On the strength of a career-high eight draw controls by
Romano, the Red Foxes outdrew the Bulldogs at 16-8.
As a team, Yale outshot Marist 34-18 and caused more
turnovers at 10-8.
Individually, three Red Foxes registered three or more
points. Kramer led the trio of Romano (3g) and Miller (2g-1a) with three goals
and an assist. In goal, Casiano finished with 12 saves, her fifth game with a
dozen or more stops on the year. Defensively, freshman Christine Astarita
(Kennett Square, Pa.) caused a team-high two turnovers, as well as collected a
team-high four ground balls.
The Red Foxes will next be in action on Saturday, March
31 at 1 p.m. when they face off with rival Siena in each squad's conference
opener. Following the game, Marist will be hosting a clinic for players of all
ages and playing levels. (Click here for more info on clinic)
