CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - In a tight, non-conference meet, the Marist men's swimming and diving team fell on the road to the Boston College Eagles of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Saturday afternoon. In a matchup that came down to the final event, the Red Foxes came up short by a 165-135 result. Junior Nick Spinella (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and sophomores Sean Sullivan (Huntington, N.Y.), and Jason Ruddy (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) highlighted Marist's effort with two wins a piece.
Sullivan started up the individual winning with a 9.94-second victory in the 1000-yd freestyle with a 9:57.62 result. He finished his sweep of distance events with a 4:55.14 showing in the 500-yd freestyle.
Spinella earned both of his victories in backstroke events as he defeated BC's Connor Stickney by nearly one second at 52.99 to 53.98 in the 100-yd race. In his second win, he was pressured by teammate Dylan Cummings (Midland Park, N.J.). In a close race, Spinella held off Cummings by 0.39-seconds with a final time of 1:56.77.
Ruddy's winning began in the 200-yd butterfly as he cruised to a 2.03-second win at 1:57.70. The sophomore won a tight race in the 100-yd butterfly event as he finished with a time of 52.35. The difference between first and third place was a less than one second.
Sophomore John Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) nearly joined the group of victorious Red Foxes with his showing in the 50-yd sprint as he was out-touched by Dan Kelly 21.67 to 21.72.
In diving action, junior Sean Molloy (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and sophomore Jacob Baker (Shavertown, Pa.) highlighted Marist's performance. Molloy won the 3-meter board with a 291.30-point effort, while Baker came in second in the 1-meter with a 290.25-point total.
The Red Foxes will close out the road portion of their schedule next Saturday, January 26 with an away meet at Seton Hall. The meet gets started at 12 p.m.
