HAMDEN, Conn. – Despite seven saves by Senior Goalkeeper Anthony Sokalski (London, Ontario), the Marist men's soccer team dropped a close 1-0 contest to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) newcomer, Quinnipiac University, on Wednesday afternoon at Quinnipiac Soccer Field. The loss drops the Red Foxes to 2-10-0 overall, and 1-3-0 in the MAAC, while the Bobcats improves their overall record to 4-3-4, and 2-0-1 in the MAAC.
"It was a hard fought game against a good opponent," said head coach Matt Viggiano. "We played a really solid second half. Unfortunately in these tight conference games it often comes down to sets and pieces and we were beaten on one today. The guys will keep their heads up and keep fighting. Thery know the MAAC is wide open and any team can win on any given day".
Marist played a tight contest for the majority of the first half despite being outshot by Quinnipiac 10-2. Sokalski made four saves for the Red Foxes. The Bobcats got on the board in the 39th minute when James Doig placed a corner kick in the box. Quinnipiac's Tobias Esche headed the ball into the top right corner of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
The Red Foxes tried their best to get on the board throughout the contest as they registered three shots on goal by Senior Gerry Ceja (Port Chester, NY), sophomore Steven Arraiano (Putnam Valley, NY), and freshman Dylan MacVane (Middlegrove, NY). Marist also registered two corner kicks throughout the contest. Sokalski registered three more stops in goal for the Red Fox defense.
Marist returns home to Poughkeepsie to face fellow MAAC newcomer Monmouth University on Saturday, October 19th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public.
