POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's swimming and diving team earned a 177-115 victory against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Fairfield to move to 2-1 on the young 2014-15 season.
Junior captain Bethany Powhida (Delmar, N.Y.) finished first in the 1,000- and 500-yard freestyles, while also leading off for Marist's winning 400-yard medley relay team. Powhida clocked in at 10:38.14 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and swam the 500-yard event in 5:09.54. She joined sophomore Isabella Morreale (Short Hills, N.J.), sophomore Meredith Wurtz (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and junior Bridget Curley (Endwell, N.Y.) on the first-place relay squad that raced to a time of 4:03.43.
Sophomore Colleen Lampe (East Setauket, N.Y.) also made a splash, taking first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.58) and 200-yard backstroke (2:11.50). Wurtz also won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.57.
In the diving events, the Red Foxes had three different top two finishers. Freshman Megan Berardelli (Ambler, Pa.) scored the most points in either the 1- or 3-meter dives when she scored 273.75 points off the 3-meter board. She finished second to senior Kimberly Tobias (San Jose, Calif.) in the 1-meter dive, as Tobias racked up 247.60 points to Berardelli's score of 243.75 points. Junior Renata Diotalevi (Madison, Conn.) came in second place in the 3-meter dive with a score of 252.82 points.
Marist will host MAAC foe Rider in its next dual meet at 6 p.m. Nov. 15. The Red Foxes and Broncs have finished first and second at the MAAC Championships for the past seven years with Marist taking six of those seven titles.
