ALBANY, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis team fell to UAlbany in its 2014 season opener, 4-3. Three Red Foxes were victorious in singles matches on Sunday morning; sophomore Karly Pang (Kaneohe, Hawaii), freshman Callie Morlock (Golden, Colo.), and sophomore Lisa Ventimiglia (Bayside, N.Y.).
“I thought we fought hard as a team,” said interim head coach Jason Sacher. “We have a great group of girls who are working hard and striving to improve each day. We will learn from this experience and become a better team going forward.”
Pang won her first singles match, defeating UAlbany's Mireille Hermans, 6-4, 6-4. Morlock defeated Kirsten Scott in third singles, 7-5, 6-3. Great Danes' Rocio Lopez was defeated by Ventimiglia by default.
Junior Sabrina Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y.) dropped her second singles match to UAlbany's Cherly Kukkonen, 6-1, 6-3. Paulina Torres earned a win for the Great Danes in fourth singles over Marist senior Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.), 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Melissa Carlay (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) fell to Alba Sala in fifth singles for the Red Foxes, 6-2, 6-2.
UAlbany swept doubles action, taking all three matches. The team of Scott and Lopez for the Great Danes downed Marist's Carlay and Morlock in first doubles, 6-0. Upperclassmen duo Campbell and Tahir were out paced by UAlbany's Kukkonen and Sala in second doubles, 6-2. In third doubles, sophomores Kaye Eastman (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Nikki Rohan (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) fell to Hermans and Torres, 6-2.
The Red Foxes open up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on Sunday, Feb. 23 at Saint Peter's.
