Marist Men's Tennis Returns to Action Against #29 Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – The Marist men's tennis team returned to action after the winter break at the Harvard Invitational as they played doubles and singles matches against #29 Harvard, Saturday afternoon.

In nine total matches the Red Foxes were able to pull out a victory in the fifth singles match and while unable to earn wins in any other matches it was a good tune up for upcoming MAAC play against a quality opponent.

"I'm very proud and pleased with the way our entire team performed. A lot of long points and the guys never gave up, this was an exciting start against the number #29 team in the country,” head coach Time Smith said. “Our doubles are still a work in progress, but this group of guys are eager to learn and I feel that we are going to peek at MAAC tournament time."

The lone victory for the Red Foxes came when freshman Timo Tanzer (Auvernier, Switzerland) upended senior Shaun Chaudhuri 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. Tanzer impressed in matches before the break and continues to do so heading into the teeth of the spring season.

On the doubles side of things freshman Justin Chanthalangsy (San Marcos, Calif.) and his teammate, senior and captain Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) were defeated by the Crimson team of senior Denis Nguyen and sophomore Sebastian Beltrame, 6-2.

Freshman Rudolf Kurz (Oberpullendorf, Austria) and senior Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) fell to freshman Grant Solomon and senior Alex Steinroeder, 6-3 and in the final doubles match of the day freshman Jan Dernic (Koper, Slovenia) and sophomore Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) were downed by freshman Kenny Tao and junior Conor Haughey 6-1.

Dube, Kurz, Guidici, Chanthalangasy, and Dernic also particpated in singles matches but were downed by members of the Crimson. The Red Foxes return to action next week in Syracuse, N.Y. as they take on Binghamton on Saturday, Jan. 24 and then Bryant on Sunday, Jan. 25.
