Bloomington, Ind. – The Marist Water Polo team opened its season today at the Indiana Kick Off dropping an exhibition match to #9 Indiana 11-6 in game one, before falling to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Wagner in game two with a final score of 9-5.
In game two, three different Red Foxes contributed goals in the second quarter after failing to find the back of the net in the first quarter. After being down 3-0 at the end of the first, senior Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.), sophomore Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, QC), and senior captain Anna-Lena Hathaway (South Pasadena, Calif.) each contributed a goal to pull within two at the end of the second quarter (5-3).
Marist was unable to tally a score in the third quarter, as Wagner College led 9-3 heading into the fourth. After holding the Seahawks scoreless in the fourth, Amorosa and Hathaway each added their second goals of the game, and the only goals of the fourth quarter, to close out the scoring for the Red Foxes ending the game with a score of 9-5.
Four different players had an assist for Marist in game two. J. Hamby, Amorosa, Hathaway, and freshman Diana Carballo (Mexico City, Mexico) each assisted on a goal. Two Red Foxes, Carballo and Amorosa, tallied a team high two steals, while J. Hamby led the way with three ejections drawn. Marist had plenty of six-on-five opportunities, but was only able to capitalize on one of those finishing the game one-for-12.
Junior goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) made 14 saves in the game against Wagner, while giving up nine goals against.
The Red Foxes will play a final match in the Indiana Kick Off Sunday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. where they face #9 Indiana once more in an exhibition match.
