LOUDONVILLE, New York - The second seed Marist volleyball team (21-9, 13-5 MAAC) advanced to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship final for the third straight season with a 3-0 victory against no. 6 Niagara on Nov. 21 in Siena's Alumni Recreation Center. The set scores were 25-23, 26-24 and 25-21.
Marist will play top seed Fairfield in a rematch of the 2013 conference final at 2 p.m. Nov. 22. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
Sophomore Kelsey Ediger posted 12 kills and 15 digs in a double-double effort while junior Amanda Schlegel had a team-high 17 digs alongside 29 assists.
Senior Courtney Shaw got her 1,000th career kill on Marist's second point of the match in an opening set that was tied 13 times. Down by five, Niagara ripped off six straight points to take a 22-21 lead. The Red Foxes would force three Purple Eagle errors however and grab a 1-0 lead.
There were six more ties in the following frame, the third coming when the Red Foxes forced an attack error to bring both sides to 21 points. With the score tied at 24, a kill from Schlegel and a block by sophomore Ashton Korona and junior Devon Dawson sealed the set.
The third set began with a 7-4 Marist run highlighted by kills from three different players. Niagara tied the score at 13, but the Red Foxes went up by four points after consecutive service aces from Schlegel and never looked back.
Niagara sophomore Rylee Hunt led the Purple Eagles with 26 digs while classmate Rayenne Hale slammed nine kills. The Red Foxes owned an 11-6 edge in blocks and led 37-28 in kills.
Marist will look to claim its first MAAC volleyball title and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships when it faces off against Fairfield in the final at 2 p.m. Nov. 22. The Stags had knocked off no. 4 Manhattan in five sets in the first semifinal of the day.
