Box Score 2 ORLANDO, Fla. - The Marist softball team (1-1) opened its 2015 season with a 6-4 win against Virginia and an 8-0 loss to George Washington at the Citrus Classic on Friday.
Game One - Marist 6, Virginia 4
Marist got on the board in the first inning against the Cavaliers with RBI singles from sophomore Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) and senior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) to take a 2-0 lead. Down 3-2 in the third inning, the Red Foxes charged back with four runs. Lalli smacked a two-run double, while junior Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) capped the rally with a single up the middle right after a Virginia pitching change to give Marist a three-run cushion.
Senior Melanie White (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) threw all seven innings, allowing just three hits, and striking out four Virginia batters.
Game Two - George Washington 8, Marist 0 (6 innings)
Duddy and freshman Gabrielle Kelliher (East Brunswick, N.J.) each went 1-for-2 in the second game. Sophomore Jayne Oberdorf (Greensburg, Pa.) threw the final two innings, allowing two hits and one earned run.
The Red Foxes continue the tournament Saturday with a game against Campbell at 10 a.m. followed by a contest versus Arkansas at 12:15 p.m.
