LA JOLLA, CALIF. - The No. 19 Marist water polo team (2-3) dropped its first two games on the opening day of the UCSD Triton Invitational. The Red Foxes were defeated in game one by No. 12 UC San Diego (4-2) by a final score of 11-5. Marist faced Santa Clara (3-2) in its second match of the day losing by a final score of 10-5.
Senior captain Anna-Lena Hathaway (South Pasadena, Calif.) scored a team-high two goals and had the only assist for the Red Foxes in game one. Senior Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.), senior captain Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.), and freshman Diana Carballo (Mexico City, Calif.) each contributed one goal in the loss to UC San Diego.
Marist struck first midway through the first quarter going up 1-0, but failed to register anymore goals in the quarter ending it down 3-1. The Red Foxes had its most productive quarter of the game in the second quarter finding the back of the net three times, but still entered halftime down 6-4. Marist would only tally one more score the rest of the game on Hathaway's goal in the third quarter. The third quarter ended with a score of 9-5. UCSD added two more goals in the fourth quarter to give the final score of 11-5. Junior goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) made six saves in the game and had 11 goals against.
In game two, sophomore Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, QC) scored three goals in the game against Santa Clara University. Senior captain Hannah Levien added two goals and a team-high three assists for the Red Foxes. Senior Allison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) and sophomore Jocelyn McQuade (Vancouver, BC) each added one assist. Henry had eight saves with 10 goals against, and had two steals.
Marist had a 3-1 lead after the first quarter on two goals by Amorosa and one goal by Levien. The Red Foxes got one goal from Amorosa in the second quarter and took a 4-3 lead into halftime. Marist failed to register a goal in the third quarter and entered the final quarter of play down by a score of 7-4. Levien scored her final goal of the game in the fourth quarter, but the Red Foxes couldn't find an answer for the Bronco offense losing by a final score of 10-5.
Marist will play in its third game against Sonoma State (1-7) on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 12:20 p.m. The Red Foxes will play one more game later in the afternoon with the opponent still to be determined.
