LA JOLLA, CALIF. – The No. 19 Marist water polo team (3-4) split a pair of games on the final day of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational, ending the weekend with a 1-3 record finishing in 14th place in a very competive field. The Red Foxes defeated Sonoma State (1-9) 10-2 in the first game of the day to advance to the 13th place match against No. 9 Loyola Marymount (7-3). Marist was defeated by a score of 6-4 in its final match of the tournament.
Sophomore Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, QC) scored a team-high three goals, had two assists, three steals and two field blocks in a win over Sonoma State. Senior captain Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) added two goals, had two assists, one steal and one ejection drawn. Senior captain Anna-Lena Hathaway (South Pasadena, Calif.), sophomores Jocelyn McQuade (Vancouver, BC) and Nastassia McGlothlin (Mission Viejo, Calif.), and freshman Celeste Brown (Carmichael, Calif.) and Alexa Ovalle (Chicago, Ill.) each contributed one goal in the match.
Junior goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) made eight saves while giving up zero goals against, had two steals and one assist. Freshman goalie Jessica Hermosillo (La Mirada, Calif.) came in for the Red Foxes in the third quarter making three saves and giving up two goals against with one steal and one assist.
Marist led throughout the duration of the match scoring four goals in the opening quarter while holding Sonoma State scoreless. In the second quarter, Levien and Amorosa each tallied a goal while the defense held the Seawolves scoreless once again to take a 6-0 lead into halftime. Brown, Amorosa, and McQuade scored for the Red Foxes in the third quarter to take a 9-1 lead heading into the final quarter of play. Each team registered one more goal in the fourth quarter to give the final score of 10-2 advancing Marist to the 13th place match against No. 9 Loyola Marymount.
Sophomore Amanda Amorosa was the only Red Fox to tally a multi-goal game in the final match against LMU scoring two goals. Senior Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) and freshman Diana Carballo (Mexico City, Mexico) added the only other goals for Marist. Senior Allison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) had one assist, two steals and two ejections drawn. Skyler Henry made 14 saves in the loss with six goals against. She also contributed five steals.
Amorosa scored the only goal for Marist in the first quarter while Loyola Marymount found the back of the net twice to end the first with a score of 2-1. Jessica Hamby, Amorosa, and Carballo each scored a goal in the second quarter to give the Red Foxes a 4-3 lead heading into halftime. Marist was unable to score in the remaining quarters of play while the Lions added three more goals to give the final score of 6-4.
Marist was three-for-eight in its six-on-five opportunities for the day.
Mairst returns to action next weekend when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa. for the Bucknell Tournament. The Red Foxes will face Hartwick (2-8) on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 6:45 p.m. Marist will then play two games on Sunday, Feb. 15 against No. 15 Long Beach State (3-5) at 10:30 a.m., and Notre Dame College (0-0) at 2:15 p.m.
