Box Score WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Marist softball team defeated host UNCW in its final game in the Seahawk Softball Spring Classic on Sunday by a score of 6-4.
Sophomore catcher Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) and senior second baseman Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) each homered for the Red Foxes. Freeman went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Freshman designated player Samantha Reilly (Toms River, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In the circle, sophomore Jayne Oberdorf pitched a complete game four-hitter. She struck out five and walked two as she improved to 2-1 on the season.
Lalli's solo homer in the second inning opened the scoring, but UNCW tied the game in the bottom half of the frame. Freeman's two-run blast in the fourth then gave the Red Foxes the lead for good.
Holding a 3-2 lead entering the sixth, the Red Foxes expanded their lead with a three-run inning. Junior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on a one-out single by Freeman. After a walk to junior center fielder Colleen McWilliams (Monrovia, Calif.), an RBI single by Reilly then plated freshman pinch-runner Kourtney Paul (Twinsburg, Ohio). McWilliams later scored on a balk for Marist's final run.
In the bottom of the sixth, UNCW's Claudia Spinelli hit a two-run homer with two outs, but Oberdorf retired all four hitters she faced after that to finish the game.
UNCW's Casey Rowland pitched a complete game in the loss. Rowland gave up six hits and four walks, and struck out nine.
Marist won its final two games of the tournament. The Red Foxes finished with a 2-3 record in the tournament, and now stand at 4-5 overall.
