CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – The Marist water polo team (5-8) was defeated by Harvard (10-4) 9-7 in the Red Foxes second game of the Harvard Invitational on Saturday night.
Senior captain Anna-Lena Hathaway (South Pasadena, Calif.) scored two goals for the Red Foxes, one steal and one field block. Senior Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) added two goals and had an ejection drawn. Sophomore Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, QC) contributed one goal and three assists. Senior Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) had one goal and two assists. Redshirt junior Elizabeth Hoffman (Pasadena, Calif.)scored one goal and tallied on assist.
Goals from A. Hamby and Hathaway in the first quarter allowed the Red Foxes to head into the second tied 2-2. Marist was unable to net a goal in the second period, while the defense remained tough only allowing one Harvard goal to be scored. The Red Foxes entered halftime down 3-2.
The Red Foxes had their most productive scoring quarter in the third scoring three goals from J. Hamby, Amorosa and Hathaway. The Marist defense played tough once again holding Harvard scoreless in the third quarter. With a 5-3 lead heading into the final quarter of play J. Hamby and Hoffman scored goals for the Red Foxes but it wasn't enough to secure a win as the Crimson scored four goals to send the game into overtime. Both teams were unable to net a goal in the first overtime. In the second overtime Harvard scored twice to win with a final score of 9-7.
Junior goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) made nine saves while giving up nine goals against. Henry also had four steals in the contest.
The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, March 8 when they take on Brown at 9:15 a.m.
