CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – The Marist water polo team (6-9) split a pair of games on the final day of the Harvard Invitational. The Red Foxes ousted Brown (7-5) 12-9 before falling to No. 9 San Jose State (16-5) 13-6 in the final game of the tournament.
In game one, sophomore Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, QC) led the way with a season-high five goals and had four assists. Senior captain Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) added two goals for the Red Foxes behind three assists. Senior Jessica Hamby scored two goals and had two ejections drawn. Redshirt junior Ellie Hoffman (Pasadena, Calif.), freshman Diana Carballo (Mexico City, Mexico) and sophomore Nastassia McGlothlin each contributed a goal to round out the scoring for Marist.
A hat trick from Amorosa and a goal from Levien allowed the Red Foxes to obtain a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Two goals from J. Hamby, and a goal each from Levien, McGlothlin and Amorosa extended the lead to 9-5 heading into halftime.
The Red Foxes maintained their four goal lead by getting a goal each from Hoffman and Carballo in the third quarter. With an 11-7 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, Marist got its only goal of the quarter from Amorosa to secure the 12-9 victory.
Junior goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) gave up nine goals against in the contest while making 10 saves. Henry had three steals in the game.
In game two, Amorosa once again led the Red Foxes with a team-high three goals. Senior captain Anna-Lena Hathaway (South Pasadena, Calif.) scored one goal and had two assists. Sophomore Molly Shamieh (Slymar, Calif.) added a goal for Marist and Levien had one goal in the contest as well.
No. 9 San Jose State started quickly and never looked back scoring four goals in both the first and second quarters. Hathaway grabbed the only goal for Marist in the first quarter, and Levien scored the only goal in the second. The Red Foxes entered halftime with a deficit of 8-2.
Freshman goalie Jessica Hermosillo (La Mirada, Calif.) came in for the Red Foxes in the second half to attempt to slow down the San Jose State offense. Shamieh scored the only goal for Marist in the third quarter while the Red Foxes' defense gave up three goals. Down 11-3 entering the fourth quarter the Red Foxes managed to outscore San Jose State 3-2 in the final quarter of play. All three goals were scored by Amorosa for her second hat trick in a single quarter of the day.
Henry made five saves had one steal and eight goals against in the first two quarters of the game. Hermosillo allowed five goals while making eight saves in the back half of the game.
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, March 14 when they travel to Long Beach, Calif. to take on Long Beach State. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
