Box Score 2 BUFFALO, New York – The Marist softball team was swept in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Canisius on Sunday. The Red Foxes dropped the first game by a score of 1-0. Marist then fell 9-5 in eight innings in game two despite a four-run comeback in the seventh to force extra innings.
Here is a closer look at each game:
Game One – Canisius 1, Marist 0
Canisius catcher Lindsey Silfer hit a two-out homer in the bottom of the fourth to account for the game's only run. Erika Mackie pitched a four-hitter as she struck out three and walked one.
For Marist, Melanie White pitched a complete game. White also allowed just four hits, and struck out seven against four walks.
The Red Foxes loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but were unable to bring home the tying run.
Junior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta was 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
Game Two – Canisius 9, Marist 5 (8 innings)
The score was tied at one apiece going into the bottom of the fifth, when the Golden Griffins scored four times.
Canisius maintained its 5-1 lead until the top of the seventh, when Marist scored four times to tie the game. An RBI single by freshman center fielder Gabrielle Kelliher made the score 5-2, and then freshman Kourtney Paul came home on a wild pitch to cut the Red Foxes' deficit to two. With two outs, Van Natta's two-run single tied the game. In the bottom half of the inning, White stranded the winning run at third with two outs.
Marist had runners on first and second in top of the eighth, but was unable to score. In the bottom of the inning, right fielder Michelle DelPrince hit a two-out walk-off grand slam.
Mackie (10-4) pitched final 1.1 innings to earn the win. White (7-8), who came in on relief of starter Jayne Oberdorf in the fifth, took the loss.
For Marist, junior first baseman Maureen Duddy went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Kelliher and senior second baseman Janine Lalli added two hits apiece.
Marist is now 14-18 overall and 4-4 in the MAAC. Canisius is 18-11 overall and 6-0 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes return to action on Tuesday, when they play a non-conference doubleheader at Holy Cross. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
