Iona Sweeps Marist in MAAC Doubleheader

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team was shut out by Iona in a both ends of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday. The Gaels earned a 3-0 victory in game one, and a 6-0 triumph in game two.
Here is a closer look at each game:

Game One – Iona 3, Marist 0

Senior Melanie White pitched a complete game for Marist with 11 strikeouts. White allowed just six hits and one walk.

The Red Foxes left 13 runners on base, and had runners advance to scoring position in six innings.

Iona's Christine Costello (4-4) pitched a complete game shutout. Costello allowed four hits and seven walks, and struck out four. The Gaels got on the scoreboard first in the second innings on a two-run homer by right fielder Courtney Miller. Iona added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double by Costello, which brought home first baseman Kristen Turner, who led off the inning with a double.

Game Two – Iona 6, Marist 0

The Gaels scored all of their runs in the second, an inning in which they scored all their runs with two outs, had two hits and were aided by three Marist errors. All six of the runs were unearned.

Iona got on the scoreboard on an RBI single by Ashlyn Morris, and a second run came in on an error. After an intentional walk to Turner, Costello blasted a grand slam over the wall in left field to put the Gaels ahead 6-0.

In the circle for the Gaels, Jordan Courage (3-10) pitched a one-hitter. She walked four and struck out four, and retired 10 straight Red Foxes between the second and fifth innings.

The lone Marist hit was a leadoff single by freshman left fielder Gabrielle Kelliher in the second.

White (9-10) started and took the loss for the Red Foxes. She went three-plus innings, and was relieved by sophomore Jayne Oberdorf, who finished with a scoreless final four innings. Oberdorf struck out four and allowed just one hit and one walk. She retired the final nine Gaels she faced.

Marist is now 17-21 overall and 4-6 in the MAAC. Iona is 10-22 overall and 7-5 in the MAAC.

The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday with a MAAC doubleheader at Quinnipiac. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon.
