Box Score 2 HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Quinnipiac on Sunday. The Red Foxes dropped the first game 4-2, but rebounded for a 3-2 triumph in 12 innings in the second contest.
Here is a closer look at each game.
Game One – Quinnipiac 4, Marist 2
Marist scored first in the top of the second, as freshman left fielder Gabrielle Kelliher reached on an infield single, and eventually came in on a wild pitch. The Bobcats answered with single runs in the second and third, but the Red Foxes tied the game in the top of the fourth on a one-out home run by freshman designated player Samantha Reilly.
The score remained tied at two apiece until the bottom of the seventh, when Jordan Paolucci belted a two-out, two-run homer to end the game.
Sophomore Jayne Oberdorf (6-7) took the loss for Marist. Oberdorf recorded three strikeouts in 3.2 innings while relieving senior starter Melanie White, who went the first three.
Hannah Lindsley (5-12) pitched a complete game for Quinnipiac. Lindsley allowed four hits and one walk, and struck out six.
Game Two – Marist 3, Quinnipiac 2 (12 innings)
Quinnipiac scored in its first at-bat, and maintained a 1-0 lead until the top of the sixth, when a two-out single by junior center fielder Colleen McWilliams scored pinch-runner Miranda Perez.
The Red Foxes took their first lead in the seventh on a two-out solo home run by junior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta. However, the Bobcats tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when an error on a base hit by right fielder Abby Johnson enabled shortstop Maria Ascher to score. Quinnipiac then loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but White escaped the jam with a strikeout and a groundout.
The score remained tied at two until the 12th, when junior first baseman Maureen Duddy led off with an infield single. Duddy then stole second, advanced to third on a flyout by Van Natta, and scored on a short fly out by sophomore designated player Rebecca Freeman.
White (10-10) closed the game with six scoreless innings to record the victory. She struck out six and allowed just three hits and two walks. Oberdorf started and had five strikeouts in the first six-plus innings. Duddy, Van Natta and McWilliams finished with two hits apiece.
Casey Herzog (2-6), who went the final 6.1 innings, took the loss.
Marist is now 18-22 overall and 5-7 in the MAAC. Quinnipiac is 10-29 overall and 5-9 in the MAAC.
Marist will return to action on Wednesday, with a non-conference doubleheader at Hartford. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
