WAPPINGERS FALLS, New York – The Marist men's tennis team earned a 7-0 victory over Quinnipiac in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match on Monday indoors at Cross Court Tennis Club to close out the regular season.
The Red Foxes won a considerable amount of closely-contested matches en route to victory. Four singles matches went to three sets, with three of those going to third-set tiebreakers. One doubles match went to a tiebreaker as well.
“Wonderful college match,” Marist Head Coach Tim Smith said. “The score was not indicative of the match.”
Coach Smith singled out the play of freshman Justin Chanthalangsy, who earned a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over Quinnipiac's Kei Ezaka. Smith referred to Ezaka as “one of the best singles players in our league.”
Marist closes out the regular season at 13-7 overall and 6-1 in the MAAC. Quinnipiac is 11-9 overall and 5-2 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes and Bobcats have earned the second and third seeds, respectively, in this weekend's MAAC Championships, and will face each other in semifinal action on Saturday at Mercer County Park Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey. Match time will be announced at a later date.
“I hope our guys can continue to peak in the next week,” Smith said. “We'll have to play Quinnipiac again, and I'm sure they'll be gunning for us.”
