Box Score 2 WEST HARTFORD, Connecticut – The Marist softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Hartford on Wednesday. The Red Foxes dropped the first game, 7-6 in 10 innings. Marist bounced back for a 12-2 triumph in the second game.
Here is a closer look at each game:
Game 1 – Hartford 7, Marist 6 (10 innings)
Freshman first baseman Samantha Reilly and sophomore second baseman Jordyn Barrera had two hits apiece. Barrera drove in two, while senior designated player Janine Lalli and sophomore right fielder Janna Korak each scored twice. Korak also belted a home run.
In the top of the second, Korak hit a leadoff homer to open the scoring. Lalli followed by drawing a walk, and came around to score on an error to put the Red Foxes up 2-0. However, Hartford answered with three in the third and one in the fourth to take a two-run lead.
Marist fought back with a three-run fifth, an inning in which the Red Foxes had just one hit. Barrera had a sacrifice fly, junior center fielder Maureen Duddy drew a bases-loaded walk, and junior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta put the Red Foxes ahead with an RBI single.
Hartford tied the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Danielle DeMarco, which brought home right fielder Peyton Fisher. The game remained tied at five until the 10th, when the international tiebreaker was applied. A squeeze bunt by Barrera in the top of the inning brought home Korak to give Marist a one-run lead. With two outs in the bottom of the innings, a two-run single by catcher Sawyer Fried gave the Hawks the victory.
Sophomore Jayne Oberdorf (6-8), who pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts, took the loss. Elizabeth Batinelas (1-5), who allowed one unearned run in 4.1 innings of relief, earned the win.
Game 2 – Marist 12, Hartford 2
Marist outhit Hartford, 16-4, as seven Red Foxes enjoyed multi-hit games. Duddy, Van Natta and junior center fielder Colleen McWilliams all belted home runs. Duddy went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs and a stolen base. Van Natta drove in four runs.
Marist started with a four-run first inning. Duddy led off the game with a home run. Sophomore Rebecca Freeman added a one-out triple, and scored on an RBI single by freshman catcher Samantha Reilly. McWilliams then belted a two-run homer.
A three-run homer in the second by Van Natta gave the Red Foxes a 7-0 advantage. Hartford got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning, but Marist added two more in the third on RBI infield singles by freshman right fielder Kourtney Paul and Van Natta.
Hartford scored in the fifth, but the Red Foxes had another big inning with a three-run seventh. Duddy, Freeman and Reilly contributed RBI singles in the frame.
In the circle, Lalli (3-5) went the distance on a five-hitter. She struck out two and walked two. Starter Bianca Ross (0-6) took the loss for the Hawks.
Marist is now 19-23 overall. Hartford is 3-35.
Marist will return home to host three doubleheaders over the next four days. The Red Foxes will have a non-conference doubleheader against St. Bonaventure on Thursday beginning at 2:30, with both games being carried live on the Red Fox Network. Marist will then host Monmouth and Fairfield in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contests on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
