BUFFALO, NEW YORK – The number one seeded Canisius Golden Griffins proved to be too much for the Red Foxes as Marist fell in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference semifinal, 15-7, Friday night at the Demske Sports Complex.

The Red Foxes started quickly leading the Griffins, 3-1 after first half goals from junior Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.), senior Jackie DiMaria (Dix Hill, N.Y.), and junior Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) but Canisius stormed back scoring four unanswered goals before trading a pair to end the half with a 6-4 lead.

Canisius came out strong in the second half as well scoring the first six goals of the half capping an 11-1 run while pulling away from the Red Foxes for good.

Senior Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.) finally got the Red Foxes on the board with their first goal of the second half with 4:35 remaining but by that time the damage was done and Marist found themselves in a 12-5 hole. Senior Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Brannigan tallied the Red Foxes remaining goals to cut the final score deficit to eight.

Canisius led Marist in draw controls 14-10, outshot the Red Foxes 32-20, and had 16 groundballs to the Red Foxes eight. In goal sophomore Abby Witczak (Mendham, N.J.) had seven saves for Marist.

With the loss the Red Foxes finish the season 8-9 overall and 3-5 in conference. Canisius advances to the MAAC Championship game and will face Fairfield.
