ANN ARBOR, Michigan -- The #24 Red Foxes never lead as they fell to the #7 University of Michigan Wolverines 16-6 on Saturday. With the loss Marist drops to 0-2 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), while the Wolverines improve to 5-2 (0-0 Collegiate Water Polo Association).
Junior Amanda Amorosa led the Red Foxes with four goals and nine shots. Freshman Katie Tijerina finished the night with one goal, four shots and two steals and junior Nastassia McGlothlin chipped in one goal, three shots and one steal.
Senior Ali Thomason led the Wolverines with four goals, five shots and one steal, while freshman Kim Johnson had three goals, two assists and four shots.
The Red Foxes outshot Michigan 29-26, converted on 2-of-8 power plays, had 15 turnovers and seven exclusions. The Wolverines converted on 4-of-6 power plays, turned the ball over 15 times and had nine exclusions.
Michigan opened the scoring 2:56 into the opening period when Johnson scored a power play goal following an exclusion called on Katie Tijerina. Just over two minutes later, Tijerina evened the score at 1-1 on a 5 meter penalty shot following an exclusion call on the Wolverines.
Thirty seconds later, Michigan regained the lead 3-2 on a power play goal by Thomason, however, the Red Foxes answered right back 19 seconds later on a goal by Amorosa, tying the score at 2-2.
The Wolverines scored 21 seconds later and ended the first period ahead, 3-2.
The second period was all Michigan as Thomson (2), Kelly Martin, Allison Skaggs and Kim Johnson scored to go into halftime ahead 8-3. Amorosa scored a power play goal at the 4:18 mark for the only Marist goal of the frame.
The Wolverines came out just as hot for the third period as Martin, Skaggs, Johnson and Graziano scored to make the score 12-3 with minutes left in the period. Nastassia McGlothlin scored with 1:14 left to trim the deficit to 12-4 with eight minutes left to play.
Just 33 seconds into the final period, Amorosa made it 12-5 but goals by Caroline Anderson and Thomason extended the Wolverine lead to 14-5. Amorosa notched a power play goal with 2:06 left but goals by Sydney Groot and Julia Sellers sealed the deal for the Wolverines and secured the 16-6 victory.
Up next for Marist is the final two matches of the Michigan Invite tournament on Sunday vs. San Diego State (8:30 AM) and Hartwick College (3:50 PM).
