BALTIMORE - With the second most points at the 2016 H2ounds Invitational on Dec. 3, the Marist women's swimming and diving team extended their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season winning streak to 40 dating back to 2009. The winning streak is the longest at Marist since the men's program won 60 straight conference meets when it first joined the MAAC in 1996 and did not lose a regular season conference competition until 2006.
The Red Foxes racked up 917.5 points, which was second to the host Greyhounds' mark of 1,243 points. Iona (771.5 points) and Saint Peter's (159 points) finished behind the Red Foxes.
Marist's relay teams highlighted the second day of competition, as the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay squads began and ended Saturday with first place times. Juniors Georgia Goldman, Sara Nestrowitz, and Deirdre Connor, and senior Meredith Wurtz clocked in at 1:37.08 at 200 yards. Nestrowitz and Connor flipped in the order of the 400-yard event and helped the Red Foxes register a time of 3:32.86.
Three out of the four relay members also had individual wins, beginning with Nestrowitz in the morning session, who raced to 1:54.54 to take the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle. She also finished second at 1,650 yards (17:33.14) behind classmate Shannon Gordon (17:19.37). Goldman's time of 58.40 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke gave her first place in the event and Wurtz was victorious in the 100-yard freestyle (51.89 seconds) in the afternoon session.
Junior Melanie Newton posted third place finishes in the 200- (1:56.08) and 1,650-yard freestyle (17:40.51).
On the diving board, junior Megan Berardelli had her second victory in as many days when she scored 256.13 points at three meters. Sophomore Lauren Katz ended up in third place with a final score of 213.52 points.
Marist will go on its winter training trip from Dec. 28-Jan. 3 in Orlando. The Red Foxes will return to McCann Natatorium on Jan. 10 to host Southern Connecticut State at 6 p.m.
