SAN DIEGO, California -- The Red Foxes fell to the #11 University of California Santa Barbara Gauchos 12-3 on Saturday in the team's opening match of the UCSD Triton Invite. With the loss, Marist falls to 2-7 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the win brings the Gauchos to 7-3 (0-0 Big West).
Freshmen Katie Tijerina and Susan Cantoni and junior Nastassia McGlothlin each scored one goal on the afternoon.
Seniors Lauren Martin and Bryn Hudson led Santa Barbara with three goals each.
The Red Foxes fell behind early with the Gauchos scoring six goals in the first 15 minutes of play, before Tijerina scored to make it 6-1 with just over thirty seconds remaining in the second quarter. Santa Barbara added one more and the two teams entered the half with the score 7-1.
Both teams traded goals in the third quarter with Cantoni finding the back of the net with 2:26 left in the period to make it 8-2.
The Gauchos scored twice in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter before McGlothlin scored to make it 10-3 with 4:07 left. Santa Barbara scored two more goals and the final buzzer sounded with the Gauchos emerging with the 12-3 victory.
