SAN DIEGO, California -- The Red Foxes fell to the Indiana University Hoosiers 8-6 on the second day of the UCSD Triton Invite. The loss drops Marist to 3-8 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the win brings Indiana to 5-4 (0-0 Collegiate Water Polo Association).
Freshman Katie Tijerina led the Red Foxes with two goals on the afternoon, while freshmen Grace Doerfler and Susan Cantoni, junior Amanda Amorosa and senior Brooke Else scored one goal.
Sophomore Kelly Matthews led the Hoosiers with four goals.
Marist jumped out to a 3-0 early lead on goals by Tijerina (2) and Cantoni and held the advantage through the end of the first quarter.
Indiana trimmed the deficit to 3-1 with 6:09 left in the second quarter. Else gave the Red Foxes back the three goal lead when she scored 2:24 later and the two teams headed into the half with Marist ahead 4-1.
The third quarter was all Hoosiers as they scored four goals in the period and took a 5-4 lead into the fourth quarter.
Indiana continued the momentum in the final period scoring three goals in the first seven minutes to take a 8-4 lead. Doerfler and Amorosa got two back for the Red Foxes but it was too little too late as the final horn sounded with the Hoosiers emerging with the 8-6 victory.
Up next for Marist is a matchup against #22 Long Beach State University in the 11th place game of the UCSD Triton Invite at 4 PM.
