SAN DIEGO, California -- The #21 Red Foxes lost to #22 Long Beach State University 16-9 in the 11th place game at the UCSD Triton Invite on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops Marist to 3-9 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the win brings Long Beach to 3-6 (0-0 Big West). The Red Foxes finished in 12th place for the tournament out of 16 schools.
Junior Jocelyn McQuade led Marist with three goals on the afternoon. Freshman Katie Tijerina had two goals, while freshman Grace Doerfler, freshman Susan Cantoni, senior Ellie Hoffman and junior Nastassia McGlothlin had one goal.
Freshman Annabel Harman led Long Beach with five goals on the afternoon.
The first period saw back and forth scoring from both teams as Doerfler, Cantoni, Hoffman and McQuade scored for the Red Foxes to match four goals from Long Beach, ending the opening frame with both teams tied 4-4.
Long Beach gained the upper hand in the second period as two goals from Marist by Tijerina and McQuade were matched and topped by three goals from Long Beach and the two teams entered the half with Marist down 7-6.
Building off the momentum from the second period, Long Beach built up a three goal lead as the third period came to an end with four goals in the frame to only two by the Red Foxes from Tijerina and McQuade again.
The fourth quarter was much the same as Long Beach found the back of the net five more times, while Marist scored only once, from McGlothlin and the match ended with Long Beach emerging with the 16-9 victory.
Up next for the Red Foxes is a three week break before heading to Cambridge, Massachusetts and the Harvard Invitation where Marist will face off against #14 Princeton University (10:30 AM) and Fresno Pacific University(3:30 PM) on Saturday March 5 and Mercyhurst University (11:45 AM) on Sunday.
