PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island -- The #20 Red Foxes picked up their second win of the season, 10-8 over the Bucknell University Bisons on Saturday in the opening match of the Brown Bruno Classic. The win brings Marist to 2-3 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the loss drops Bucknell to 0-1 (0-0 Collegiate Water Polo Association).
Junior Jocelyn McQuade scored a team high five goals, while junior Amanda Amorosa chipped in two goals, three assists, one steal and two field blocks and freshman Katie Tijerina scored one goal to go along with two assists, five steals and one field block.
The first quarter was dead even with both teams finding the back of the net twice. Amorosa and McQuade scored for the Red Foxes.
Marist took over in the second quarter as Amorosa, McQuade and Brooke Else scored and both teams headed into the half with the Red Foxes holding a 5-3 advantage.
The third quarter again was all Marist as Alexa Ovalle and McQuade (2) scored while the Bison only found the net once, bringing the score to 8-4 in favor of the Red Foxes.
With just eight minutes remaining, Bucknell mounted a comeback scoring four times in the final frame, however goals by Tijerina and McQuade secured the victory for Marist.
"It's nice to start off the tournament with a win" head coach Natalie Benson said. "We are continuing to get goals from a good portion of the team and we made some nice adjustments defensively from last weekend. Jocelyn had a great game today using her strengths on the counterattack."
Up next the Red Foxes will square off against #21 Harvard University at 1:40 PM in their second match of the Brown Bruno Classic.
