TEMPE, Arizona – The Red Foxes saw their three match win streak come to an end Saturday afternoon with a 8-4 defeat to the #13 University of the Pacific Tigers at the ASU Invitational II. With the loss, Marist stands at 6-11 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the Tigers improve to 8-12 (0-0 Golden Coast Conference).
For the second match in a row, junior Amanda Amorosa led the Red Foxes with three goals on seven shots while Nastassia McGlothlin had one goal, one assist and four shots. Marist shot .142 (4-for-28) on the afternoon as a team.
Senior Skyler Henry finished with eight goals against and eight saves as well as one steal.
Sophomore Rachel Krieger led the Tigers with three goals on eight shot to go along with two steals while sophomore Aelish Guinn scored two goals on five shots with one steal. As a team Pacific, shot .258 (8-for-31) in the match.
The Tigers opened the scoring just 2:34 into the opening period when junior Ellen Tiedemann found the back of the net to give Pacific the 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later, Krieger made it 2-0 but Amorosa answered back 1:16 later with a goal that trimmed the deficit to 2-1. However, the remainder of the frame was all Tigers as Krieger and sophomore Karolina Hlavata found the back of the net, giving Pacific the 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Defense was the name of the second period for both teams as Guinn was the lone goal scorer of the frame and the Tigers led 5-1 at the half.
With 4:45 left in the third period, Amorosa notched her second of the afternoon but Krieger answered back two minutes later. McGlothlin found the back of the net with the third period winding down and the two teams entered the final eight minutes with Pacific ahead 6-3.
Freshman Viktoria Szmodics gave the Tigers the 7-3 lead with 6:18 left in the match. Amorosa (assisted by McGlothlin) trimmed the deficit to 7-4 with a goal at the 4:25 mark but the Pacific defense was too strong and the Red Foxes were unable to come any closer. A late goal by Guinn extended the lead to four and the final whistle sounded with the Tigers walking away with the 8-4 victory.
