Water Polo Falls 11-5 to #5 Michigan in ASU Invite

TEMPE, Arizona – The #23 Red Foxes wrapped up competition at the ASU Invitational II on Sunday with a 11-5 loss to #5 Michigan. The loss drops Marist to 6-13 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while Michigan improves to 19-6 (0-0 Collegiate Water Polo Association).

Junior Amanda Amorosa and freshman Katie Tijerina chipped in one goal on five shots to go along with two steals each. The Red Foxes got goals from five different scorers and shot a combined .172 (5-for-29) on the afternoon.

Senior Skyler Henry finished with 11 goals against, nine saves and three steals.

Ali Thomson, Danielle Johnson and Laura Jimenez all led the Wolverines with two goals a piece. Michigan shot a combined .392 (11-for-28) in the match.

The Wolverines jumped out to the early lead with goals by Thomason (2), Johnson, Jimenez and Heidi Moreland to head into the second quarter with the 5-0 advantage.

Julia Sellers and Jimenez both found the back of the net in the second quarter as both teams found a little more defensive momentum. With sixteen minutes gone, it was Michigan ahead 7-0.

Freshman Grace Doerfler got the Red Foxes on the board with 4:20 (assisted by senior Brooke Else) left in the third quarter but Kelly Martin answered back for the Wolverines less than a minute later. Amy Ridge and Johnson scored for Michigan before Tijerina got one back for Marist and the two teams entered the fourth quarter with the score 10-2 in favor of the Wolverines.

Both teams battled back and forth and Susan Cantoni finally found the back of the net with 2:55 left in the match to make it 10-3. Delaney Cleveland answered for Michigan and the goal seemed to awaken the Red Foxes as sophomore Diana Carballo and Amorosa scored for Marist. It was too little too late as the final buzzer sounded with the Wolverines walking away with the 11-5 win.

Up next for the Red Foxes is a trip to Northridge, California and a matchup against #25 Cal State Northridge at 6 PM on Monday.
