NORTHRIDGE, California – The #23 Red Foxes wrapped up their non-conference schedule and lost their fourth consecutive match on Monday, losing 13-12 to the #25 California State University Northridge Matadors. Marist now stands at 6-14 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the win improves the Matadors to 9-14 (0-0 Big West Conference).
Junior Amanda Amorosa led the Red Foxes with six goals while freshman Katie Tijerina chipped in three goals. Freshman Ariana Singer with two goals and junior Jocelyn McQuade with one goal rounded out the scoring for Marist on the afternoon.
Sophomore Madeleine Sanchez paced Cal State Northridge with six goals while sophomore Paula Abellan Garcia and junior McKenzie Pollei chipped in two goals each.
The Matadors led at the end of the opening period 4-2 off goals by Abellan Garcia, sophomore Shannon Hovanesian and Sanchez (2). Tijerina and Amorosa found the back of the next for the Red Foxes.
In the second quarter, goals by Pallei and Sanchez (2) for Cal State Northridge and Amorosa (2) for Marist,gave the Matadors the 7-4 lead at the half.
Down by three, the Red Foxes found a little more offensive rhythm in the third period when Tijerina (2), Amorosa (2) and Singer (2) found the back of the net while Pallei and junior Emily Fuller score for Cal State Northridge. With eight minutes left in the match, Marist held the 10-9 lead.
The home team was not to be denied the victory however, as Abellan Garcia, junior Alexis Elias and Sanchez (2) scored for the Matadors. Amorosa and McQuade found the back of the net for the Red Foxes but it was not enough as the final buzzer sounded with Cal State Northridge victorious 13-12.
Up next for Marist is the 2016 MAAC opening weekend as the Red Foxes squares off against Villanova (9 AM) and #22 Iona College (2:30 PM) in Villanova, Pennsylvania on Saturday.
