CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts -- The Red Foxes dropped their opener of the Harvard Invite to the #20 Princeton Tigers on Saturday by a final score of 13-6. The loss drops Marist to 3-10 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the win brings Princeton to 7-1 (0-0 Collegiate Water Polo Association).
Freshman Katie Tijerina led the Red Foxes with two goals, one assist and three steals. Junior Amanda Amorosa chipped in two goals as well to go along with one assist and one field block. Freshman Grace Doerfler and junior Jocelyn McQuade each had one goal on the afternoon.
Sophomore Chelsea Johnson led the Tigers with four goals, while sophomore Haley Wan and junior Hannah Lapkin chipped in three and two goals each respectively.
Princeton established the early lead with Wan (2), freshman Lindsey Kelleher and Johnson found the back of the net, while goals by Doerfler and Amorosa for the Red Foxes made it 4-2 in favor of the Tigers after the first.
The second quarter saw much of the same action as the first, with Princeton scoring another four goals by Johnson (2), Wan, and Lapkin. Marist answered with a tally from McQuade and the score was 8-3 at the half.
Both teams came out for the second half fired up and it was the Red Foxes who established a little momentum off two goals by Tijerina. Freshman Eliza Bratt scored for the Princeton and the score was 9-5 heading into the final period.
Despite the momentum from the previous frame, Marist was unable to keep the Tigers in check with sophomores Sydney Cheong and Emily Smith as well as Lapkin and Johnson scoring. The Red Foxes answered with a goal by Amorosa but it was not enough and with the final buzzer Princeton came away with the 13-6 win.
