Box Score 2 FAIRFAX, Virginia – The Marist softball team split two games on its final day of the George Mason Tournament on Sunday. The Red Foxes suffered a 4-3 defeat to Army West Point in the morning, and bounced back for an 8-2 triumph over Howard in the afternoon.
Senior third baseman Maureen Duddy led Marist on the day with three hits, three runs scored and three stolen bases.
Here is a closer look at each game:
Game One – Army West Point 4, Marist 3
Marist got off to a fast start with two runs in the home half of the first. Duddy led off with a bunt single, stole second, and then scored on an RBI double by senior first baseman Colleen McWilliams, who scored on an RBI single by junior catcher Rebecca Freeman.
Army West Point cut Marist's lead in half in the top of the third, but the Red Foxes answered in the bottom half of the inning without a hit. Duddy reached on an error, and scored on an RBI by McWilliams on an infield error.
However, the Black Knights grabbed the lead for good with a three-run sixth. The winning run came on a two-out single by left fielder Mae Wadyka, which scored pinch-hitter Carrie Reilly.
For Marist, Duddy finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. McWilliams drove in two runs. Freshman Brooke Peterson (0-1), who went the first 5.1 innings, took the loss. Junior Jayne Oberdorf was not charged with a run in the final 1.2 innings.
Kristen West (5-1) went six innings to earn the win for Army West Point. Renee Poirier pitched a 1-2-3 seventh with two strikeouts for her second save.
Game Two – Marist 8, Howard 2
Marist scored a run in each of its final at bats: one in the second, third, and fourth; two in the fifth; three in the sixth.
Senior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta, sophomore left fielder Gabrielle Kelliher and freshman second baseman Brandi Coon had two hits apiece. Van Natta drove in two runs. Sophomore designated player Kourtney Paul scored two runs and stole two of the Red Foxes' five bases in the game.
Kelliher started the scoring in the second with her second homer in as many days.
Freshman Kallen Leeseberg (1-1) pitched a complete game for her first collegiate win. Leeseberg struck out four and allowed just five hits.
Catcher Brooklyn Emory went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Howard. Starter Janessa Flynn (0-4), who pitched the first five innings, took the loss.
With the split, Marist concluded play at the tournament with a 3-2 record. The Red Foxes are now 7-3 overall this season, and will return to action next weekend at the UMBC Tournament. Once again, Marist will play five games in a three-day span between Friday and Sunday. The action will start with two games against Coppin State on Friday at 3 and 5:15 p.m.
