CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts – The Red Foxes picked up their second win in a row, a 14-5 victory over the Mercyhurst Lakers on Sunday at the Harvard Invite. The win improves Marist to 5-10 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the loss drops the Lakers to 4-6 (0-0 Western Water Polo Association).
Junior Amanda Amorosa led the Red Foxes with three goals, one assist and one steal. Freshman Grace Doerfler scored three goals and had one steal, while freshman Shannon Taliaferro scored her first career goal to go along with one assist. In all, eight Marist players scored in the match.
Building off the momentum from a 13-2 win on Saturday afternoon, the Red Foxes scored four times in the opening period off goals by Doerfler, freshman Susan Cantoni (2) and senior Brooke Else. Along with the strong offense was strong defense, as the Lakers only found the back of the net once, giving Marist the 4-1 lead at the end of the first period.
Marist continued with the strong defensive effort in the second, shutting out Mercyhurst. Doerfler and Else scored and at the end of the first half, the Red Foxes were up 6-1.
The third quarter saw much of the same dominance by Marist, as freshman Katie Tijerina, Amorosa (2) and junior Nastassia McGlothlin scored for the Red Foxes. The Lakers found a little offensive momentum, scoring twice and after three periods the Red Foxes were up 10-3.
With the lead in hand, Marist did not let up in the fourth quarter as Doerfler, Amorosa, junior Jocelyn McQuade and Taliaferro scored. The Lakers added two tallies of the own and as the final buzzer sounded, the Red Foxes emerged with the 14-5 victory.
Up next for Marist is a week off before the team heads out west to Tempe, Arizona. The Red Foxes will compete in the ASU Invitational II where they will play #23 Cal Baptist (9 AM) and #13 University of the Pacific (3:30 PM) on Saturday, March 19th before playing #9 Arizona State (9:30 AM) and #5 University of Michigan (2 PM) on Sunday, March 20th.
