Water Beats VMI 18-8 for Fifth MAAC Win of Season

ALBANY, New York – With an 18-8 victory over the VMI Keydets, the #23 Red Foxes picked up their fifth Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon. Marist now stands at 11-15 (5-1 MAAC), while the loss drops VMI to 6-15 (1-5 MAAC).

Grace Doerfler led the Red Foxes with four goals, three drawn ejections, one assist and one steal, while Katie Tijerina chipped in three goals, three steals and one assist and Amanda Amorosa finished with three goals, six assists and three steals. Susan Cantoni had two goals, two assists and two steals and Courtney Fisher, Brooke Else, Nastassia McGlothlin, Diana Carballo, Alexa Ovalle and Jocelyn McQuade all chipped in one goal each.

Skyler Henry and Hope Vickers shared the goalie duties, finishing with six goals against, 12 saves, two steals and one assist and two goals against and two saves respectively.

Coming off a tough two goal loss to Wagner earlier in the day, Marist looked to bounce back early. Eight goals in the opening quarter did just that, as Doerfler, Tijerina, Amorosa (2), McQuade, Cantoni, Carballo and McGlothlin found the back of the net for the Red Foxes. Marist also had a very strong defensive quarter, limiting the Keydets to only one goal and at the end of the period, the Red Foxes were up 8-1.

The second quarter was more of a defensive battle as Marist scored three times off goals by Doerfler (2) and Ovalle and VMI found the back of the net one, and the two teams headed into the half with the Red Foxes holding the 11-2 advantage.

The third period saw the Keydets gain a little more offensive momentum as they scored four goals, the most of any period in the match. Else and Tijerina (2) answered for Marist and with eight minutes remaining in the match, the Red Foxes were up 15-6.

In the final eight minutes, Fisher, Cantoni and Doerfler scored for Marist while the Keydets found the back of the net twice and the final buzzer sounded with the Red Foxes emerging with the 18-8 victory. The Red Foxes will then host their only home matches of the season on Sunday April 10th vs. Villnova at 10 AM and at 5:30 PM vs. Iona, when Marist will honor seniors ElseHenry and Ellie Hoffman during a Senior Night celebration.
