Box Score 2 POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team swept Hartford in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Gartland Field. The Red Foxes earned a 10-0 victory in five innings in game one, and a 5-3 triumph in game two.
Here's a closer look at both games:
Game One – Marist 10, Hartford 0 (5 inn.)
Senior designated player Colleen McWilliams homered in all three of her at-bats, and freshman Brooke Peterson came within two outs of a perfect game to lift the Red Foxes.
McWilliams drove in five runs in the contest. She belted two-run homers in the first and third innings, and added a solo shot in the fourth for a five-RBI game.
Peterson retired the first 13 batters she faced before allowing back-to-back singles with one out in the fifth. Those were the only two batters to reach against her. Peterson threw just 57 pitches, 41 of which went for strikes. She finished with five strikeouts, three of which were looking. Peterson also retired four batters in the first pitch of the at-bat. It was her first collegiate victory (1-2) and complete game.
The Red Foxes scored four runs in the first, five in the third and one in the fourth. Freshman second baseman Claire Oberdorf went 3-for-4 with a two-run single in the third and a stolen base. Senior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta had a two-run double in the first. Junior catcher Rebecca Freeman, freshman left fielder Casey Page and sophomore designated player Miranda Perez all went 2-for-3 with a run scored as the Red Foxes finished with 15 hits.
Bianca Ross (2-10) pitched a complete game for Hartford. Lexi Wilkerson and Marisa Ferguson singled for the Hawks.
Game Two – Marist 5, Hartford 3
Marist opened the scoring when sophomore center fielder Gabrielle Kelliher homered to lead off the bottom of the second. However, an error enabled Hartford to score twice in the top of the third. The Red Foxes answered with two runs in the bottom of the third on RBIs off the bats of freshman second baseman Brandi Coon and sophomore left fielder Kourtney Paul on infield ground balls.
Hartford tied the game in the top of the fourth when right fielder Peyton Fisher led off with an infield single, stole second, and then reached third and scored on two subsequent infield groundouts. Marist then grabbed the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning as belted a one-out triple, and then scored on a wild pitch. The Red Foxes scored the game's final run in the fifth when Oberdorf was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which forced home Coon.
Freshman Kallen Leeseberg (5-1) pitched a four-hit complete game. Leeseberg struck out five, threw 68 of her 103 pitches for strikes, and allowed just one earned run. Van Natta, McWilliams and freshman designated player Madison Lee had two hits apiece for the Red Foxes. McWilliams had a sixth-inning triple off the top of the wall that was just a few feet short of being her fourth homer of the day. Senior infielder Maureen Duddy stole her 32nd base, which tied her single-season program record set last year.
Fisher finished 2-for-3 with a run scored for Hartford. Wilkerson (2-10) pitched a complete game.
Marist is now 26-8 overall. Hartford is 4-29.
Marist returns to action on Saturday, when the Red Foxes host Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon.
