NEW ROCHELLE, New York – The #25 Red Foxes suffered their third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference defeat of the season on Sunday morning, losing to the #20 Wagner College Seahawks by a final score of 9-8. With the loss, Marist drops to 14-17 (8-3 MAAC) while the win improves Wagner to 27-9 (12-0).
Jocelyn McQuade led the Red Foxes with four goals. Susan Cantoni chipped in one goal, one assist and one field block, Brooke Else finished with one goal, one assist and one steal, Diana Carballo scored one goal to go along with two steals and Amanda Amorosa chipped in one goal, two steals and one field block on the morning.
Skyler Henry manned the net, finishing with nine goals against, 10 saves and one steal.
Following an 11-9 win by Wagner in the two team's matchup on April 9th, the top two teams in the MAAC came out ready to play on the final day of the regular season for each squad.
The Red Foxes came out strong in the opening quarter off goals by McQuade (3) and Cantoni. Wagner found the back of the net twice and at the end of the first eight minutes Marist was ahead 4-2.
The second quarter saw the Seahawks score three goals and put on a strong defensive effort, holding the Red Foxes scoreless. At the end of the first half it was 5-4 in favor of Wagner.
Both teams came out ready for the second half and two goals by McQuade and Carballo were matched by two goals by the Seahawks and with eight minutes remaining in the match, Wagner still lead 7-6.
With the match on the line, Marist responded with two goals by Amorosa and Else but the Seahawks were able to maintain their lead, finding the back of the net twice as well. When the final buzzer sounded it was Wagner emerging victorious 9-8.
