Water Polo Loses 11-9 to Wagner for 1st MAAC Loss

ALBANY, New York – The #23 Red Foxes suffered their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference loss of the season with an 11-9 defeat to the #20 Wagner College Seahawks on Saturday morning. Marist now stands at 10-15 (4-1 MAAC) while Wagner improves to 20-9 (5-0 MAAC).

Amanda Amorosa led the Red Foxes with three goals and one drawn ejection, while Katie Tijerina chipped in two goals, one assist and one steal, Susan Cantoni finished with two goals, one assist, one field block and one drawn ejection, Grace Doerfler chipped in one goal and one assist and Nastassia McGlothlin scored one goal to go along with one assist, six steals, one field block and one drawn ejection.

Skyler Henry played the whole match in goal and gave up 11 goals and had nine saves, to go along with three steals and one assist.

In a rematch of the 2014 and 2015 MAAC Championship game and with both teams undefeated in conference play, both teams came out fired up for the match.

In the first quarter, three goals by the Seahawks were matched by three from Doerfler, Amorosa and Cantoni and after the first eight minutes, the two teams were tied 3-3.

The Red Foxes gained the early advantage in the second period when a goal by Tijerina and a strong defensive effort shut out Wagner, to give Marist the 4-3 lead heading into the half.

However, the Seahawks answered with five goals in the third quarter and the Red Foxes were only able to find the back of the net twice, by Cantoni and Amorosa on the perimeter. With only eight minutes remaining in the match, it was 8-6 in favor of Wagner.

The Red Foxes matched their highest quarter scoring output in the match in the final period, scoring three times from Tijerina, Amorosa and McGlothlin. The Seahawks, however, answered with three goals of their own and as the final buzzer sounded, Wagner emerged victorious 11-9.

Up next for Marist is a second MAAC match against VMI at 4 PM. The Red Foxes will then host their only home matches of the season on Sunday April 10th vs. Villnova at 10 AM and at 5:30 PM vs. Iona, when Marist will honor seniors ElseHenry and Ellie Hoffman during a Senior Night celebration.
