Marist's Gibson Nominated For Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Senior cornerback Cameron Gibson of the Marist football team has been named one of 165 national nominees for the Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team.

Gibson will serve as one of the Red Foxes' four captains for the 2016 season. Following each of his first three seasons with the Red Foxes, he was named to the Pioneer Football League (PFL) Academic Honor Roll. He was named Honorable Mention All-PFL following the 2015 season, in which he started all 11 games, was credited with 10 passes defensed, and led the Red Foxes in solo tackles with 37.

Throughout his time at Marist, Gibson has been heavily involved in community service projects. On campus, he has served as a peer mentor, participated in the White Ribbon campaign, and volunteered with the Special Olympics. He has spent time with area youths as part of Haviland Sportmanship Day and Project Mobile, and has volunteered at a variety of events.

In conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the honor, Allstate and the AFCA will add three additional spots to this year's team and announce a final roster of 25 members in September. For the first time in the award's history, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team will be comprised of 12 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, 12 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA and an honorary head coach. From the nominees submitted by sports information directors across the nation on behalf of their schools, a special voting panel consisting of former Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members will select the 2016 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.

Marist will open the 2016 season on Saturday, Sept. 3 against Bucknell. The Red Foxes will play six of their 11 games at Tenney Stadium this season. For ticket information, please click here.

About the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Teams were established in 1992 by the College Football Association, recognizing the extra efforts made by college football players and student support staff off the field.  AFCA became the governing body of the award in 1997 and continues to honor college football players who go the extra mile for those in need.  Allstate worked to present the award starting with the 2008 season.
