Football Faces Penn for First Time in Program History

Red Foxes Meet Quakers Friday Night at 7 in Philadelphia

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist University football team will face Penn of the Ivy League for the first time in program history on Friday night.
 
The Red Foxes will face the Quakers at historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Last Time Out
  • Marist earned a 19-14 home win over PFL preseason favorite San Diego.
  • It was the Red Foxes' second win over the Toreros in 18 tries.
 
With A Win ...
  • Marist would have its first win against an Ivy League opponent in its history.
  • Marist would improve to 4-2 for the first time since 2005.
  • Marist would finish with a winning non-league record (3-1) for the first time since 2009 (2-1) and have its most non-league wins since 2008 (4, was an independent that season).
 
First Since ...
  • This is the first time Marist has been above .500 after five games since 2021 (also 3-2).
  • Marist has defeated two full scholarship opponents this year for the first time with its wins over New Haven and Wagner.
  • Marist has won two non-league games for the first time since 2009.
  • Marist's season-opening 31-14 win over New Haven on Aug. 29 was its first since 2012, when the Red Foxes prevailed at Bryant. This was Marist's first non-league home victory since 2015, which occurred against Sacred Heart. It was Marist's first non-league victory at all since 2017, when the Red Foxes won at Georgetown.
  • This is Marist's first 12-game regular-season schedule in program history.
 
National Recognition
  • Nate Furrow (Defensive Player of the Week) and Jeremy DeCaro (Freshman of the Week) both earned Honorable Mention from Stats Perform following Marist's win at San Diego. Furrow had five TFLs and three sacks, while DeCaro amassed 140 all-purpose yards.
  • Nate Robinson Jr. was named Stats Perform FCS Defensive Player of the Week after a 10-tackle, two-interception performance at Wagner.
  • Chase Hatton has earned Honorable Mention for Stats Perform FCS Freshman of the Week twice, following Marist's wins against New Haven and Wagner.
  • Ethan Yuska earned Honorable Mention for Stats Perform FCS Special Teams Player of the Week after averaging 45.8 yards on five punts at Butler.
  • Chris Leonardo is a national semifinalist for this year's Campbell Trophy.
 
PFL Awards
  • Marist has earned four PFL awards this year, with two apiece in two weeks.
  • Following Marist's win over San Diego, Nate Furrow was named Defensive Player of the Week, and Jeremy DeCaro was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
  • After Marist topped Wagner, Nate Robinson Jr. was named Defensive Player of the Week, and Tristan Shannon was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
  • Prior to this year, the last time Marist won two PFL awards in the same week was 2019.
 
Fourth Down
  • Marist is tied for second in the FCS in fourth downs converted (12), and is first in fourth down attempts (22).
  • Marist has scored three touchdowns the last two weeks on fourth down, and six this season. Four have been over 25 yards (27, 35, 35, 59).
  • Marist leads the FCS with 12 fourth down stops on defense.
  • Marist ranks seventh in the FCS in fourth-down conversion percentage (25%).
 
Defense Does It
  • Marist is tied for fourth in the FCS in interceptions (seven), eighth in Red Zone defense (scores by opponent on 66.7% of trips), 11th in third down conversion defense (33.3%), T-13th in turnover margin (+1.0 per game), and 15th in pass efficiency defense (109.88 passer rating allowed).
  • Nate Robinson Jr. leads the FCS in passes defensed per game (2.4) and pass break-ups (nine). Robinson's four PBUs vs. San Diego were the most by a Red Fox in a game since 2018 (Ryan Webb). His nine pass break-ups and 12 passes defensed are the most in the program in a season since 2015 (Zach Adler, Zach Quarles).
  • Nate Furrow's five tackles for loss vs. San Diego were the most by a Red Fox since 2013 (Landon Moore), and his three sacks were the most since 2015 (Alex Spiess).
  • Marist's 56 yards passing allowed at Wagner was the lowest total the Red Foxes permitted in a game since 2007.
  • Marist five interceptions at Wagner were its most in a game since 2021.
 
Offensive Production
  • Among tight ends, Connor Hulstein ranks tied for first in the PFL and tied for second in the FCS in touchdown receptions, first in the PFL and tied for sixth in the FCS in receptions, and first in the PFL and seventh in the FCS in receiving yards.
  • Lance Martinez is fifth in the FCS in yards per reception (22.9).
  • Marist has committed just six turnovers this season.
  • Marist had two 100-yard rushers against New Haven (Sonny Mannino, 109; Tristan Shannon, 104). It was the first time the Red Foxes had two 100-yard rushers in a game since 2018.
 
Special Special Teams
  • Marist leads the FCS in kickoff return average (33.8).
  • Tristan Shannon's 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown at Wagner was Marist's first since Glenmour Leonard-Osbourne took one 94 yards for a score at Morehead State in 2022.
  • Against New Haven, Marist's special teams generated three turnovers (two muffed punts, one kickoff return fumble), a blocked field goal (Jalen Carpenter), and a touchdown (Rene Barber off a muffed punt). Ethan Yuska's last two punts were both at least 50 yards, with one downed at the New Haven 2, and the other that resulted in Barber's touchdown.
 
About Penn
  • The Quakers are coming off a 36-24 win over Dartmouth in the Ivy League and home openers this past Saturday.
  • Julien Stokes is the first player in program history to win an Ivy League weekly award (Special Teams Player of the Week) the first three weeks of a season.
  • Quarterback Liam O'Brien is the reigning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week.
