WEST POINT, New York – The Marist men's tennis team picked up its first win of the spring season Saturday afternoon after winning one of its two matches on the day at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center in West Point, New York. In the process, head coach Tim Smith captured his 400th career win. The Red Foxes fell to Army West Point but defeated Sacred Heart.
“In order to get a significant number of wins it cannot be done without outstanding players,” said Coach Smith. “One of our most memorable wins was one from recent memory when two years ago we upset Monmouth who had beat us in the regular season and who was picked to finish first in the season. I really felt that due to the leadership of Matteo Guidici we beat a team in the finals that we would not ordinarily would have beaten.”
Against Sacred Heart the Red Foxes won from the top spots in doubles which in turn set the tone for singles play. Justin Chanthalangsy and Javier Restrepo won at the first doubles position, 7-6. Dylan Fletcher and Rudolf Kurz teamed up to defeat Sacred Heart's Seji Hosokowa and Brian Einstoss, 6-3.
In singles, Restrepo won again from the top spot, defeating Hosokowa, 6-1, 6-1, Gianlucca Massa took down Cory Seltman in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, and Jan Dernic won by default over Derek Chapman. Fletcher and Lars Schouten were leading in their matches that went unfinished.
Against Army West Point the Red Foxes picked up two singles wins but were unable to come back and pull out a victory over a strong Army team they had beaten last season.
Marist started slowly in doubles dropping both matches from the one and two spots. Kurz and Massa picked up the Red Foxes lone singles wins in the overall match.
“Watching both of the matches certainly provided me with teaching moment for the practices, we started out slowly in the match against Army West Point in doubles which also carried over into singles,” said Smith. “In both matches I was most impressed with the play of Gianlucca Massa.”
Next up the Red Foxes will face Hofstra (Feb. 5), and then Wagner and Fordham (Feb. 19) before taking on Stony Brook (Mar. 10), Yale (Mar. 11), and Fairfield (Mar. 12) in a non-conference match between conference foes.
