WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey – The Marist men's tennis team was defeated 4-3 by Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Monmouth in its regular season finale on Saturday afternoon. With their first loss in 12 matches, the Red Foxes finish the regular season with a record of 16-3 (6-1 MAAC).
The Hawks won from all three doubles positions to take the first point in the match, which turned out to be the deciding point, as Marist and Monmouth won three sets each in singles play.
Rudolf Kurz won from the second position over Przemyslaw Filipek, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, Justin Chanthalangsy won from the fourth position over Christian Vieira, 6-2, 6-2, and Dylan Fletcher won from the sixth position over Sergio Martinez, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.
“This was an exciting college match. Kudos to Javier Restrepo, Gianlucca Massa, Rudolph Kurtz, and Dylan Fletcher,” said Head Coach Tim Smith. “It was a very hard fought match that shows we are right in the mix for the upcoming MAAC Championships. After losing the first set, Fletcher came back and won the next two, including an exciting 10-8 tiebreaker with his teammates and the opposing team cheering on every single point.”
The Red Foxes' next match will be on Saturday, April 29 in the MAAC Championships. Marist's seed and opponent will be determined following the result of Sunday's match between Quinnipiac and Monmouth (now 10-11 overall, 6-0 in the MAAC.
