Men's Soccer Continues Road Trip at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, Rhode Island – The Marist men's soccer team (3-1-0) is back in action with match four of its season long six game road trip, when the Red Foxes take on the Rhode Island Rams on Sunday at 4 PM.

LAST TIME OUT:

Marist is coming off a 3-0 win at American on Thursday. The Red Foxes opened the scoring for the first time this season, when in the 19th minute junior Juan Parada found freshman Allen Gavilanes on the right side. Gavilanes noticed the goalie was far out of the goal and lofted a great shot over his head and into the far left corner for the 1-0 lead. Just over five minutes later, a scrum in the box produced a loose ball and sophomore Samad Bounthong poked it home for the 2-0 and his first goal of 2017. The Eagles put the pressure on the Marist defense in the second half, forcing senior Mark Rajovic to make several key saves. With just under 20 minutes left, sophomore David Nkansah-Siriboe carried the ball on the left side and found Parada on the wing, who's cross found Gavilanes in front who flicked it on to senior Brendan Gallivan in front for the tap in, his first goal of the season and the three goal lead.

DOUBLE DOSE OF RANKINGS:

For the second consecutive week, Marist was ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Northeast Region, coming in at #4 in the Sept. 5th poll. Previously, the Red Foxes were ranked #2 in the Aug. 29th poll to open the season. With the fourth place ranking, Marist remains the highest ranked Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference team with Iona (#5), Monmouth (#7), Rider (#9) and Manhattan (#10) also featured in the poll.

RULIN' ROOK:

Gavilanes currently leads the team with four assists and eight points and is tied for first with two goals and eight shots total. In just four career games for the Red Foxes, he has one game with one goal and two assists, has one game with one goal and one assist and has recorded at least one point in three of four. 

CONTRIBUTIONS FROM ALL OVER:

Marist has gotten goals from six of its 11 players who have played in all four games this year and have seven of the 11 with at least one point.

PLAYER TO WATCH:

Rajovic has played all 360 minutes in goal for the Red Foxes and has one shutout to go along with four goals against and 17 saves for a 1.00 goals against average and a .810 save percentage in four games.

SCOUTING THE RAMS:

Rhode Island comes into the match at 2-2 and are coming off a 4-0 win over Bryant on Thursday at home. Junior Chae Brangman leads the Rams with three goals and seven points and sophomore Peder Kristiansen is currently first on the team with three assists and six shots on goal. Rhode Island has scored eight goals and have five different players who have scored in its four games this season.

Senior Nils Leifhelm has played every minute in goal and has a six goals against and 16 saves for a 1.42 goals against average and a .727 save percentage.

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING:

The match is the first ever meeting between Marist and Rhode Island.

NEXT UP:

Following the match with the Rams, the Red Foxes will travel to the Bronx for a matchup at Fordham on Wednesday at 7 PM. Fordham currently stands at 2-2-1 on the season and are coming off a 4-0 win at Lafayette on Friday. Last season, they went 10-7-4 and won the Atlantic 10 Championship to advance to the NCAA Tournament but fell to the Boston College Eagles 1-0 in the first round.
