Water Polo Falls to #6 Hawaii

MANOA, Hawaii -- The #23 Marist water polo team wrapped up play at the Rainbow Invite with a 20-7 loss to the host #6 University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine on Sunday.

With the loss, the Red Foxes stand at 0-3.

SUMMARY:

The Rainbow Wahine opened the scoring just 35 seconds into the game on their second shot of the game. Marist tied things up 34 seconds later on the power play when junior co-captain Katherine Tijerina found sophomore Anais Mathes for the man up score. Hawaii answered with a 3-0 run over the next 1:55, before the Red Foxes trimmed the deficit to 4-3 with 3:49 left in the period off goals by juniors Susan Cantoni and Ariana Singer.

However, that was as close as Marist would come as the Rainbow Wahine went on a 11-0 run to end the first half with the 15-3 advantage.

In the second half, the Red Foxes got goals from juniors Grace Doerfler (2) and Caoimhe Whitebloom and freshman Aminadi Anorve, while Hawaii found the back of the net five more times to emerge with the 20-7 victory.

KEY STATS:
  • The Rainbow Wahine out shot Marist 32-20
  • Hawaii finished with a .625 shooting percentage to the Red Foxes' .350
  • Each team had 3 power play goals
QUOTE:

"This trip we all learned something new as a group and individually" said head coach Chris Vidale. "I know losing by 13 isn't the ideal situation for an athlete but these are the necessary steps in changing and growing a winning program. I have 19 athletes that have bought into getting better day by day and that are in pursuit of happiness not pleasure. Pleasure is winning a non conference game against a Hawaii or a Cal but happiness is winning a MAAC Championship. Happiness takes time and is a journey and I'm proud to be on this journey to happiness with these strong young women."

UP NEXT:

Marist returns to action next weekend in Ann Arbor, MI at the Michigan Invite against #3 UCLA (Sat noon), #14 Hartwick College (Sat 5:15 PM) and #8 University of Michigan (Sunday 11:30 AM).
