#24 Water Polo Returns to Action at Michigan Invite

ANN ARBOR, Michigan -- The #24 Marist water polo team is back in action at the Michigan Invite on Saturday and Sunday, hosted by the University of Michigan Wolverines. 

The Red Foxes will square off against the #4 UCLA Bruins (Noon) and the #13 Hartwick College Hawks (4 PM) on Saturday, before wrapping up the tournament against the #8 Wolverines (11:30 AM) on Sunday.

LAST TIME OUT:

Marist opened the season last weekend at the Rainbow Invite in Manoa, HI with a 12-7 loss to the #22 Loyola Marymount Lions and a 17-12 loss to the #4 Cal Bears on Saturday before falling 20-7 to the #6 Hawaii Rainbow Wahine on Sunday. 

DOUBLE DOSE OF NATIONAL RANKINGS:

The Red Foxes picked up two national rankings this past week, coming in at #12 in the USA Water Polo Women's National Collegiate Rankings and #24 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Week 2 Poll as well.

MAAC WEEKLY AWARDS:

Junior center Grace Doerfler and freshman center Lauren Smith were named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Water Polo Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week respectively, the conference announced on Wednesday.

Doerfler finished with four goals on 11 shots, four points, a .364 shooting percentage and three drawn kick outs in three games at the Rainbow Invite last weekend. She had two goals on three shots vs #6 Hawaii, one goal on four shots and one drawn kick out vs #22 Loyola Marymount and one goal on four shots vs #4 Cal. 

In her first three collegiate games, Smith finished with three goals, four points, four shots, a .750 shooting percentage, two drawn kick outs, one assist and one steal at the Rainbow Invite last weekend. She had two goals on two shots in her first career game vs #22 Loyola Marymount, had one goal on one shot and one steal vs #4 Cal and had one shot and one assist vs #6 Hawaii.

SCOUTING THE BRUINS:

UCLA enters the weekend with a 5-0 overall record and a #4 ranking in the CWPA Week 2 Poll. The Bruins opened the season with an 11-2 win vs #22 Loyola Marymount University on Jan 13th and then went undefeated at the UCSB Invitational with a 5-4 win over #8 Michigan, a 21-4 win vs #T25 Fresno Pacific, a 10-6 win at #19 University of California at Santa Barbara and a 9-3 win vs #16 University of California San Diego. 

SCOUTING THE HAWKS:

Hartwick opens their season this weekend ranked #13 in the CWPA Week 2 Poll and are coming off a 26-10 (6-2 CWPA) 2017 season. The Hawks are led by senior utility Zsofia Polak who led the team with 94 goals, 56 assists, 148 points and 44 drawn kick outs last season. Senior goalie Josette Santos also returns for Hartwick who finished 2017 with 216 saves and 234 goals allowed for a 9.34 goals against average.

SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES:

Michigan enters the weekend with a 3-2 overall record and a #8 ranking in the CWPA Week 2 Poll. The Wolverines opened their season last weekend at the UCSB Invitational picked up a 14-5 win vs #21 Cal State Northridge, a 10-7 win at #19 UCSB and a 11-4 win vs #16 UC San Diego, while falling 5-4 vs #3 UCLA and 5-3 vs #5 Arizona State.

UP NEXT:

Following the Michigan Invite, the Red Foxes head to Providence, RI for the Brown Bruno Classic on Saturday, Feb. 3 where they will face off against Harvard (10:20 AM) and host Brown University (5:20 PM).
